SALTS (Sail And Life Training Society) is a registered charity based in Victoria, BC that offers dynamic sail trailing programs for youth age 13 – 25 from all walks of life aboard the traditional tall ships Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift.

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sailed aboard the Pacific Grace on October 1st along with our crew and trainees representing partner charity Jack.org. This was the third Royal visit SALTS has hosted. In 1987, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh sailed aboard the Robertson ll, and so it was an echo from history when his grandson sailed aboard our Robertson II replica, Pacific Grace. Perhaps Prince George will find his way aboard in another ten years or so!

Our second schooner, Pacific Swift also has a royal pedigree, having hosted Prince Michael of Kent (1st cousin of Her Majesty the Queen) in the year 2000. The Swift’s British connections run deep, as she is a replica of the “Swift” of 1778, which was in service with Britain’s Royal Navy from 1779 to 1783.

The Duke and The Duchess seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves as they actively hauled lines to raise the sails. The Duchess even took the helm and steered the ship alongside the dock in front of thousands of people lining the inner harbor! We were honored by their visit and blessed by the way it raised the profile of the transformational work SALTS and sail training does in the lives of young people.
